Pre-planning housing analysis - collaboration with Sir Richard MacCormac
Location: Bath
The late Sir Richard MacCormac had long been interested in housing typologies and developed what he called a toolkit in determining possible housing densities on any given site. He produced a research paper named ‘Sustainable Suburbia’ featuring efficient arrangements, or clusters, of housing typologies.
The practice collaborated with Richard and Bath Council to assist in a qualitative analysis of a vacant site. The study took into account the planners desire to maximise dwelling numbers against the extreme sensitivity of the location, within the World Heritage site. Can the feel of suburbia (2-3 storey family houses each gardens, shared green spaces, allotments, schools and good transport infrastructure) be achieved at 50dph?
